At the center of the exhibition “In Colour” by Bryan Adams are striking portraits of international icons from music, fashion, and culture - staged with intense color effects. Only works from the In Colour series are shown, which develop a unique visual language through the deliberate use of colored plexiglass.
After five years, Adams is presenting himself for the second time at the Leica Gallery Munich. For the famous new series In Colour, he has staged friends, colleagues, actors, models, and celebrities. Always on equal footing, always with maximum proximity, without exposing the subjects. Whether Amy Winehouse or Mick Jagger, Kate Moss, or even Queen Elizabeth II: apparently, everyone felt comfortable in front of his camera. Adams repeatedly succeeded in revealing the person behind the mask. And he skillfully plays with the clichés of celebrity photography through ironic and humorous touches. The experimental use of colored plexiglass gives the portraits in the In Colour series a special intensity.
Bryan Adams is far more than an outstanding photographer of famous personalities. For Wounded: The Legacy of War, he portrayed British soldiers injured in combat in 2011 after their deployments in Afghanistan or Iraq. Despite all the shocking constraints, the young men and women appear confident and strong in front of the camera. With equal empathy, Adams approached people on the margins of society in the series Homeless. These intense images evoke compassion and respect and demonstrate the photographer’s commitment to the often overlooked and his engagement with serious topics. Taken together, the series make it clear how brilliantly Adams masters photographic communication with both his subjects and the audience. Portraits that not only stand out but also leave a lasting impression.
