Ása Steinars on the Cine Compact 1 Experience

You experience your work very intimately as both creator and viewer. How did it feel to watch your own films at home with the Leica Cine Compact 1? Did it change the way you connected with them?

It felt really special, actually. Normally, I experience my work in a very fast way, on my laptop while editing, on my phone when posting, or on social media, where everything moves so quickly. So, watching my own films at home on a bigger screen with the Leica Cine Compact 1 made me slow down and see them in a different way.

I noticed small details that I don’t always pay attention to, like the texture in the landscapes. It reminded me why I captured those moments in the first place.

I think it also changed the feeling of the work. Instead of just being content that it had been finished and published, it became more of an experience. Sitting at home and watching it this way brought me back to the places I had filmed and brought up the feelings of being there.

Can you describe your first evening using the projector? What stood out to you in terms of the atmosphere, image, and the overall feeling?
What stood out to me was how much more immersive everything felt. The image had this beautiful depth to it.

I also liked that it became more of a shared moment between the whole family. Because with the projector, it’s something you sit down to watch. You make the room cozy, dim the lights, and suddenly the whole mood changes, and everyone is watching together. You get fully immersed in it.

Overall, it made the evening feel very special. Like bringing a small piece of the outside world into our home and experiencing it together.

The Cine Compact 1 is designed to be easily movable. Did you find yourself using it in different spaces or settings, and if so, how did that shape your viewing experience?
Yes, I think that was one of the things I enjoyed most about it. It didn’t feel like something that had to stay in one fixed place. I could move it around depending on the evening, the mood, or where we felt like spending time. So we kept testing it in different places, depending on whether we wanted to be standing and walking around, or curling up under the blanket and really watching what was happening on the screen.

Nothing felt set in stone, and we could change the setup depending on the mood. We weren’t tied to one screen or one room; we could create the feeling we wanted, wherever we were.

How did the design and simplicity of the projector fit into your home and daily life? Did it feel like a natural part of your environment?
Yes, it felt very natural in our home. I’m usually drawn to things that are simple, well-designed, and don’t create too much visual noise, so the Leica Cine Compact 1 fits in well. The design is beautiful and timeless.

I particularly liked that it didn’t look like a big technical object taking over the room, and it blended into the space in a quiet way. That’s important to me because our home is already quite full of life, with family, work, and everyday chaos, so I appreciate objects that feel calm and intentional.

The simplicity also made it easier to use more often and move around. Sometimes with tech, if it feels too complicated, you only use it occasionally. This felt more effortless, like something you could bring out for a cozy evening with friends, use it as an ambient background, or even use it to view your own work differently.

Leica emphasizes optical precision and timeless design. Did you feel these qualities translated into the viewing experience, and if so, in what ways did they stand out to you personally?
Yes, I felt that quite clearly. What stood out to me most was the quality of the image. I never expected that level of detail or the way it captured the images and colours so well, even down to the very smallest details, like the textures in the landscapes.

Leice Cine Compact 1 outside

Looking at your overall experience, what moments or situations best revealed the Strengths, or limitations, of the Cine Compact 1 in a real-life, creative setting?
Definitely, when we spent the weekend in a beautiful cabin in Iceland. After the kids had fallen asleep, we decided to create an outdoor movie night and projected the film onto the wall of the cabin. That moment really stood out to me because it felt so special and really showed that there are no limitations.

It brought back the feeling of old outdoor cinemas. Sitting outside, surrounded by nature, felt really magical and like a moment that we will remember.

That experience also gave me so many ideas for future family moments. Movie nights outside, cozy evenings at home, bringing it to cabins, or creating small cinema moments wherever we are.

I also found myself using it in more everyday ways, like putting on a workout class at home and projecting it on a larger screen, which made it feel much more fun and motivating.

For me, that was probably the biggest strength: it can turn ordinary moments into magical ones.
