Werner Bischof - "Between Color and Black and White"
"New" Color Works and B&W classics by the legendary Swiss photographer

Werner Bischof (1916–1954) is one of the most significant photographers of the 20th century. As a member of the renowned photo agency Magnum, he gained recognition primarily for his impressive black and white images, in which he masterfully captured moods and portrayed his subjects with a silent dignity. Bischof began exploring color photography early on. Starting in 1938, he created his first colored works, many of them using the sophisticated Devin Tri-Color Camera.

The exhibition will showcase a series of these rare color photographs, highlighting Bischof's exceptional sense of light, composition, and atmosphere. Additionally, his most famous black and white images will be presented, including the legendary photo of Shinto priests in the snow-covered Meiji Shrine in Tokyo and the famous penguins on a walk in Edinburgh. The direct comparison of both styles offers new insights into the work of a photographer who continuously balanced between documentary accuracy and artistic freedom.
