Thanks to the support of an organization that works with girls who are victims of violence, the substitute mother managed to get her niece into a boarding school where she stays 5 days a week. In this place they can take care of her and take her to school while the substitute mother begins to look for a more stable job.

The substitute mother decided to march with her niece on November 25th, 2019 on the streets of Mexico City with a contingent who marched to denounce the wave of femicides in the country, lack of access to justice and impunity in cases that have been documented.

The substitute mother and niece sleep together since they are mother and daughter. The house where they lived at the time had only one room and the niece does not like to sleep alone since her mother was murdered. The niece still has night terrors brought on by the trauma.

Since becoming a mother, they have moved several times, all in neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city, in precarious areas with high rates of insecurity and crime.

About Greta Rico
Greta Rico is a documentary photographer, journalist and educator focused on gender and human rights issues. Her work has been published in magazines, print and digital media such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Women's Media Center, The HuffPost, El País, Cuartoscuro, La Jornada, and Lado B, among others, and she has collaborated with UN offices and various civil society organizations. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in Mexico and in cities such as New York, Tehran, Isfahan, Rome, Guayaquil, Kota Kinabalu, Valparaiso and London. Greta holds a Master’s degree in Feminist Studies and is part of the Advisory Committee of the international platform Women Photograph and is a member of the Diversify Photo collective.
