Meet Bob

Jasper Doest

The exhibition “Meet Bob” by Dutch photographer Jasper Doest revolves around the Caribbean flamingo Bob: His life took a dramatic turn when he flew into a hotel window in Curaçao and suffered serious injuries. Cared for by local veterinarian Odette Doest, he quickly became a figure of hope for the island and its wildlife and environmental initiative. Photographer Jasper Doest‘s outstanding project deals with the fragility of our eco- system and the impact of civilization on wildlife, but also tells a very personal story.

Flamingo Bob accompanies veterinarian Odette Doest in her work on the Caribbean island. Odette's cousin, the award-winning Dutch photographer Jasper Doest, documented their work with his camera – and made Bob world famous. “Bob came into my bedroom at 6:43 a.m. on a Saturday morning,” Jasper Doest recalls of a visit to his cousin in Curaçao. The unfamiliar surroundings, the even more unfamiliar climate, and the jet lag intensified the unreality of the encounter. “A magnificent pink flamingo stood next to my bed. Bob tilted his head, looked at me, and waddled out the door, seemingly unimpressed by my disheveled appearance. My camera was in my bag on the other side of the room. I remember thinking, ‘No one will believe me.’”
