On the road with Phil Penman

New YouTube Series
How do you capture the soul of a city in pictures, especially if you’re visiting it for the first time? In our new YouTube series, we accompany internationally renowned street photographer Phil Penman as he takes a photographic tour of Zurich. With his Leica M11-P at his side and an eye for the extraordinary, he takes us with him on a visual journey through light, structures, and urban history.

Two Days in Zurich
Phil lives and works in New York – a city that embodies street photography like no other. But for two days, he is setting Zurich in his sights and will uncover this city’s very own imagery in the process: clear lines, the first rays of the sun, and quiet moments. This results in some excellent snapshots of Zurich, taken with intuition, experience, and a finely honed sense for capturing atmosphere.

Experience two days full of inspiration, visual calm, and striking street photography – through the eyes of Phil Penman.

Inspired Imagery
Phil not only explains his method in the video, but also shares his approach: Why he starts taking pictures straight away as soon as he arrives. His perspective changes by the hour. And why the early morning, from the dark to the blue hour to sunrise, offers the most creative potential.
If you’re interested in street photography or are looking for photographic inspiration, you’ll find plenty of ideas in this video: from the deliberate use of various focal lengths, to working with silhouettes and layers, to intentional pictorial composition. All the while, attention is focused on one key question: how do you get your subject to say something?
Besides providing insights into his digital work with Capture One as well as technical tips, Phil talks about the essentials: the courage to develop your own style and the art of taking time to observe scenes.
The Overview Map
As an additional highlight, we are providing an overview map of the locations for Phil’s photos in Zurich. These will help you explore the places shown in the video yourself, as a first step to embarking on your own photographic journey through the city.
