Village Royal and Leica are pleased to invite you to discover the work of internationally renowned New York-based Leica photographer Phil Penman at an exclusive exhibition running from October 3 to November 17, 2024.

Held in the Passage du Village Royal, the exhibition takes you to the heart of Paris, New York, Rome, Tokyo and Melbourne through the lens of a passionate photographer whose work has been hailed for its ability to capture the immediacy, contrasts and authenticity of urban life.

The experience of creating an image is more important than the final result.

Phil Penman, born in Great Britain, has been documenting the ever-changing street scene of New York City for over 25 years. During his career as a news and magazine photographer, with a large body of work in publications such as The Guardian, The Independent, The New York Review of Books, among others, he has photographed major public figures and historic events. In particular, his coverage of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center was broadcast on NBC's Today program, as well as on the BBC, History Channel and Al Jazeera, and his images have been included in the archives of the September 11 Memorial and Museum.

His work on pandemic lockdowns in New York was acquired by the U.S. Library of Congress, whose collection contains works by great Depression-era documentary filmmakers such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. In addition to exhibitions in Leica galleries in New York, Washington, D.C., Boston and London, Penman's street photography has been featured in international exhibitions in Venice, Berlin and Sydney.

He also travels the world running photography workshops for the Leica Akademie. Recently, he was named one of the “52 Most Influential Street Photographers”, alongside such legends as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Diane Arbus and Garry Winogrand. Penman's books, “Street”, published in 2019, and “New York Street Diaries”, published in 2023, have both become bestsellers and have been presented at New York's Museum of Modern Art.
