Leica Watches Today

This anniversary timepiece laid the foundation for the development of the current watch collections from Leica and inspired Dr. Andreas Kaufmann’s fundamental question: “What should a Leica watch actually look like?”

This sparked a collaboration with Leica designer Professor Achim Heine. At the same time, a partnership was established with Reinhard Meis to develop a dedicated movement for Leica watches. The result was the patented push-crown mechanism, inspired by the shutter release button of a Leica camera. After more than a year and a half of meticulous development, refinement and adjustments measured in tenths of a millimetre, the Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2 were finally completed: made in Germany and produced by ‘Lehmann Präzision’. The watches were officially introduced to the public in the spring of 2022.

The Unmistakable Leica Spirit: The Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2

The name ZM refers to the origins of the earliest watches, which were referred to as ‘Zeitmesser’ (i.e. ZM) in the German, meaning ‘timepiece’. The design of the watches draws on the rich brand heritage, with many iconic Leica camera and lens elements incorporated into the watches: the dial cut-outs, the power reserve indicator, and even the softly rounded lugs when viewed from the side. The details inspired by the M cameras were further developed within the ZM 1 and ZM 2, resulting in distinctive components with strong recognisability.

The Second Watch Collection: Leica ZM 11 and ZM 12

In February 2025, we introduced a new watch collection: the remarkable ZM 11 and ZM 12. A completely new design approach results in a unique visual effect. The heart of the watches lies in their two-layered dial, which creates an almost mystical depth through the interplay of light and shadow. A sight that captivates in both the ZM 11 and ZM 12 and reveals a different impression from every angle. The collection unites the craftsmanship of watchmaking with everything that defines photography: discovering new views through shifting perspectives. Both models feature automatic movements and are the first Leica watches to do so. The Leica boutique calibre LA-3001, developed in partnership with Swiss watchmaker Chronode, offers an accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day and is tested in five positions. The finely finished movement features a ruthenium-coated rotor and provides a 60-hour power reserve. The alternating sandblasted, brushed, and polished surfaces once again echo the aesthetic language of Leica cameras.
