To mark the centenary, on 9 September 2025, we celebrated the opening of the exhibition "Leica. A Century of Photography" at the Fernán Gómez Cultural Centre in Madrid, which traces 100 years of photographic history since the launch of the revolutionary Leica I in 1925, presenting 174 works by legendary photographers such as Steve McCurry, Sebastião Salgado, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt and many more.

Grand opening in Madrid

The opening event was attended by Dr Andreas Kaufmann (Chairman of the Supervisory Board), Matthias Harsch (CEO), Karin Rehn-Kaufmann (Artistic Director and General Representative of the Leica Galleries) and Javier Liedo (Managing Director Spain & Portugal). They all gave a warm welcome to the guests, offering an introduction to Leica's history and growth, before continuing with the preview of the exhibition.

Photographic Exhibition on a Century

Throughout the emblematic Fernán Gómez Cultural Centre in Madrid, guests were able to view a selection of 174 photographs by leading international photographers in the different rooms.

Leica Classic Treasures

The exhibition also featured a selection of classic cameras such as the Leica I (1925) and Leica II (1932), as well as audiovisual and historical materials from the Ernst Leitz Museum collection, which Leica has opened to the public in the German city of Wetzlar. The exhibition in Madrid illustrates Leica's technological and aesthetic evolution over a century of history.

More than just an exhibition: centenary activities

Leica will also be organising a series of experiences at the Leica Store & Gallery Madrid and at the exhibition itself until January 2026. These will include photography workshops, talks with experts and guided tours.
