To mark Leica’s centenary, the exhibition “Leica. Un siglo de fotografía” (Leica: A Century of Photography) officially opened on 9 September 2025 at the Fernán Gómez Cultural Centre in Madrid. The exhibition invites visitors to embark on a journey through 100 years of photographic history, starting from the revolutionary Leica I being launched in 1925 right through to the present day. The exhibition features 174 well-known works by photographers like Steve McCurry, Sebastião Salgado, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt and many more.

Grand opening in Madrid

The event was attended by Dr Andreas Kaufmann (Chairman of the Supervisory Board), Matthias Harsch (CEO), Karin Rehn-Kaufmann (Art Director of Leica Galleries International) and Javier Liedo (General Manager of Leica Spain and Portugal). They all gave the guests a warm welcome and introduced them to Leica’s history and development before the exhibition officially opened to its first visitors and marked its premiere.

A Century Documented Through Photographic Works

In the exhibition rooms at the Fernán Gómez Cultural Centre, guests had the opportunity to view a selection of 174 photographs by renowned international photographers across the various halls.

Treasures and Classics from Leica

Alongside the photographic works, the Madrid exhibition showcased several of the company’s classic cameras, including the Leica I (1925) and Leica II (1932), as well as audiovisual and historical material that highlighted Leica’s technical and stylistic evolution over a century of history. These loaned items originate from the collection held at the Ernst Leitz Museum in Wetzlar.
