Who produces the Leica watches?
The Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2 watch collections embody simplicity and timeless elegance. The design of this luxurious collection bears the unmistakable signature of German product designer Prof. Achim Heine, who created unconventional solutions for traditional timekeeping functions. These high-grade timepieces, including their movements, are “Made in Germany” from concept to production. The movements and components are manufactured by “Lehmann Präzision” using exclusive production methods.
The Leica ZM 11 and ZM 12 are likewise expressions of exceptional engineering. Both collections are powered by the distinctive Leica LA-3001 movement, developed in collaboration with Chronode, a Swiss company renowned for developing and producing high-end mechanical movements. Together with Leica, it has combined elegance and precision in the unmistakable designs of the ZM 11 and ZM 12.
What special features do the Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2 offer?
The Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2 represent a new expression of refinement. Their design is defined by a domed sapphire crystal and finely bead-blasted surfaces, refined through brushed and polished details. The case features a fully integrated exhibition back, while the unique, patented push-crown is inspired by the shutter release of Leica cameras.
The status indicator of the movement, the unique power reserve display, the day/night indicator, and the additional functions of the models all rely on custom-built mechanisms: the manually wound LH-10 (ZM 1) and LH-20 (ZM 2) calibres. These movements combine engineering and craftsmanship with outstanding design and luxurious detail.
Are the Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2 available in different editions?
In addition to the classic black/silver models, both watches are available in the Monochrom Edition, the Urban Green Edition, and the exclusive Gold Limited Edition.
The Leica ZM Monochrom, presented in deep black, mirrors the iconic aesthetics of the Monochrom cameras. The Leica Urban Green Edition features a unique fumé noir dial with a rich dégradé from green to black. In combination with the new Milanese stainless-steel bracelet, it beautifully reflects the harmony between nature and urban life.
The Leica ZM Gold Limited Edition is a tribute to Leica’s legacy of pioneering craftsmanship. Limited to 50 pieces, the ZM Gold Limited Edition unites two prestigious metals, gold and titanium, in an exclusive masterpiece. Building on the success of the Leica ZM watch collections, this edition embodies the unwavering commitment of Leica to iconic design and exceptional watchmaking, enriched with a touch of luxury.
What makes the dial of the Leica ZM 11 and ZM 12 unique?
Individuality and innovation define the distinctive dual-layer dial design of the Leica ZM 11 and ZM 12. It consists of two overlapping, ultra-thin layers (0.4 mm). Between the crystal and the inner bezel sits a black ring inspired by Leica camera lenses. This allows light to glide softly and elegantly across the dial, creating a striking effect that changes colour depending on the viewing angle. This dynamic interplay of light and shadow is a tribute to the history of watchmaking, combined with innovation and a passion for fine mechanics.
In which variants are the Leica ZM 11 and ZM 12 available?
The ZM 11 and ZM 12 collections stand as a testament to their craftsmanship, showcasing precision and an unwavering appreciation for timeless design. The Leica ZM 11 features a 41 mm case with three options: the ZM 11 Titanium Launch Edition with a black gradient to red transition – limited to 250 pieces; the ZM 11 Titanium Coffee Black with a golden-brown to black gradient; and the ZM 11 Steel Midnight Blue with a blue-black gradient.
The Leica ZM 12 is a new interpretation of the dual-layered dial in a 39 mm case. It is available in four versions: the ZM 12 Steel Blue Orange with a summer-blue gradient to orange transition; the ZM 12 Steel Silver Grey with a monochromatic silver to grey transition; the ZM 12 Steel Olive Black with an olive-green to black gradient; and the ZM 12 Titanium Chocolate Black with a warm brown to black gradient. Each variation explores colour differently, creating a distinct aesthetic for each watch.
Why does Leica produce watches?
The DNA of watchmaking has always been embedded in the Ernst Leitz workshops, in every optical instrument, and in every Leica camera. It is visible in the production process, in the precision of the craftsmanship, and in the brand itself.
The origins of Leica as we know it today can be traced back to Ernst Leitz I, who, at just 20 years old, went to Neuchâtel, Switzerland, to learn the art of watchmaking at Matthäus Hipp’s telegraph and watch factory.
He returned to Wetzlar with this expertise and began building optical instruments, primarily microscopes. These developments later led to the first Leica lenses and ultimately to a breakthrough in photography: in 1913, Oskar Barnack invented a smaller, lighter camera with exceptional image quality, the Ur-Leica, affectionately called ‘Lilliput’, which continues to shape the identity of Leica today.
Returning to the brand’s heritage, following in the footsteps of Ernst Leitz I and inspired by the Leica M series, Leica introduced the ZM 1 and ZM 2 Watch Collections in 2022. These are unique, high-quality timepieces that pay tribute to the Leica tradition of exceptional engineering.
