Photography with the Leica SL-System
What is the Leica SL-System?
Who is the Leica SL-System aimed at?
The Leica SL-System is designed for anyone looking to capture images and films of the highest quality. This includes passionate photography enthusiasts, ambitious beginners, experienced image-makers and professional production teams. There is no need for years of technical experience to begin using the system. Clearly laid-out menus, intuitive control elements, a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and precise autofocus ensure a straightforward start. At the same time, the advanced features and extensive customisation options mean the camera can grow with your skills, supporting even the most demanding creative projects.
How does the Leica SL differ from other mirrorless cameras?
The Leica SL-System boasts several unparalleled features: exceptional image quality, advanced technology, robust build quality and intuitive operation. Features such as the full-frame sensors, high-resolution EyeRes® viewfinder, hybrid autofocus, 5-axis image stabilisation and professional connectivity give you the confidence to produce compelling results in any situation. The robust metal bodies are manufactured in Germany and are IP54-rated. The SL-System’s defining feature is its balanced combination of uncompromising performance and connectivity with simple, customisable operation to meet your individual needs.
Which lenses can I use with the Leica SL?
The Leica SL-System offers a comprehensive selection of fast prime and high-performance zoom lenses. Thanks to the L-Mount standard developed by Leica, all compatible lenses from the L-Mount Alliance can also be used. This gives you an exceptionally wide range of options for shooting portraits, landscapes, architecture, travel photography, wildlife, reportage and video productions. With the appropriate adapters, most Leica M-, R- and S-Lenses can be used on SL-Cameras too. Even the professional Leitz Cine lenses from the Hektor series can be used on SL-System cameras without an adapter.
Can I use Leica M-Lenses on the Leica SL?
Yes. You can use Leica M-Lenses with the Leica SL-System via the Leica M-Adapter L. This enables you to combine the distinctive character and optical quality of legendary M-Lenses with the technical benefits of an SL-Camera.
M-Lenses are manually focused. SL-Cameras assist you with functions like focus magnification and focus peaking, the latter of which highlights in-focus areas in colour. Together, these features provide precise control over sharpness and image rendering, optimised by the correction data profiles for M-Lenses included in the firmware.
Is the Leica SL suitable for video recording?
Yes. The Leica SL-System is an extremely powerful hybrid platform designed for professional video production. Depending on the camera model, it offers features such as 8K or 6K Open Gate recording, 4K recording at up to 120 frames per second, 10-bit recording, L-Log, HDMI output, USB-C connectivity and timecode support. With fast CFexpress memory cards and the option for external recording, you can carry out a wide range of creative tasks with the SL-System. From personal filmmaking and online content to high-end commercial productions.
What is the difference between the Leica SL and the Leica M?
The Leica SL- and Leica M-Cameras represent two distinct approaches to photography.
The SL-System is a modern, mirrorless camera with an electronic viewfinder, powerful autofocus and image stabilisation, advanced video functions and a wide range of interchangeable lenses. It is particularly well suited to dynamic subjects, professional assignments and film productions, as well as situations where speed and flexibility are essential. In contrast, the classic Leica M is based on the rangefinder principle, offering a deliberate, manually focused approach to photography with compact M-Lenses. The M offers a particularly immediate and immersive photographic experience, while the SL provides a wider range of automated and professional tools. Both systems deliver outstanding image quality. The key factor is which system best suits your working style and means of expression.
Why should I choose the Leica SL-System?
If you want a camera that combines uncompromising image quality with long-term flexibility and intuitive operation, choose the Leica SL-System. This system offers outstanding Leica optics, powerful full-frame technology, precise autofocus, professional video functions, robust construction and access to the extensive L-Mount ecosystem. Above all, however, the SL-System is designed to inspire confidence and provide security: it supports beginners as they learn whilst offering experienced creatives the performance and customisation options they expect from a professional tool.
Which Leica SL-Lens should I buy first?
The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 28–70 f/2.8 ASPH. is an excellent first lens for many photographers. Its focal length range makes it suitable for everyday, travel and portrait photography, as well as reportage and numerous other professional applications. Its constant aperture of f/2.8 delivers impressive performance in low light and enables deliberate use of sharpness and blur. Those who prefer fixed focal lengths and prioritise optical performance will find the APO-Summicron-SL lenses, which have a lens speed of f/2, to be an excellent choice. The 35 mm and 50 mm focal lengths are among the most popular and versatile options.
