Finding Connection

Holly-Marie Cato with the Leica SL3-S

Discover Mexico City with London-based photographer Holly-Marie Cato and her Leica SL3-S. As she navigates the vibrant streets, Holly-Marie immerses herself in the city's rich culture and dynamic energy. Her photography is a thoughtful exploration of how people move through and connect with their environments, always rooted in a desire to form authentic connections. With the Leica SL3-S, Holly-Marie finds the confidence to engage with strangers and capture meaningful moments, turning fleeting encounters into lasting stories.

“Some people choose words on paper, others a canvas and paint. I choose my Leica to communicate with the world around me. At the heart of it, we are all trying to understand and to be understood. In a world of so much noise and information, I strive to communicate my experiences with both clarity and joy - and my Leica helps me do that.”

“I want fewer barriers between the tools that I use and the people I want to connect with, and the Leica SL3-S feels like an extension of my arm. When roaming with my Leica, it not only allows me to document the world around me, but often my camera sparks conversation. I'm not walking around aimlessly, I'm capturing moments, and my camera gives me a boldness to approach people, to be inquisitive, to explore new places and to ask deeper questions. The best thing is, when I know more, my eyes seek more and the work I create becomes richer for it.”

About Holly-Marie Cato

Holly-Marie Cato is a photographer and videographer whose work is consciously informed by her background in architecture. When not working in London, she divides her time between Mexico City and her late great-grandmother’s home nestled in the Blue Mountains of Portland, Jamaica.

She explores how people interact with and exist within the built environment, capturing the nuances of human presence in both urban and natural spaces. Her storytelling has taken her around the world, documenting themes of resilience, human rights, and wildlife conservation. Whether collaborating with grassroots organisations or international brands, she brings an empathetic eye and a bold visual style to every project.

At the centre of Holly-Marie’s photographic practice is the aim to form valuable connections with humanity, which she says stems through her mother’s work in public health.

“My mother taught me, like the teams she manages, to treat people as people, not numbers in a case file or subjects in a photograph, but living human beings deserving of respect, time and consideration. I hope in the body of work I create, people see wonderful, emotion rich moments, but more than anything, I hope they see a respect for humanity, like the women in my life have displayed and shared through love.”
