"Schwarz, Rot, Gold!" by Philipp Reinhard
The Leica Gallery Stuttgart presents from May 24 to July 6, 2024 the photographer and filmmaker Philipp Reinhard, who has been accompanying the German national football team as a team photographer since 2017. His exhibition at the Leica Gallery Stuttgart showcases not only well-known photo moments but also unseen motifs that provide a new perspective on the world of elite sports. His sports reportage caters to both football fans and photography enthusiasts alike.
Philipp Reinhard's photographs offer an impressive retrospective of more than seven years with the German national football team. The portfolio includes numerous international matches and training sessions, the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as well as empty stands during the 2021 European Championship under pandemic conditions. As the official DFB team photographer, he is responsible for team photos, player portraits, and game highlights. Additionally, he captures moments from training, inconspicuous sidelines, and intimate, close-up snapshots. This creates a multifaceted image of the team, and Reinhard excels in his photographic quality. Through his photographs, we can sense and follow the team spirit and dynamics in various aspects.
Often, he takes a step back as a photographer and through his framing, he clearly illustrates that photography plays an important yet subordinate role in the players' daily routines. For example, the setup for player portraits is arranged in a small space within a hotel room. Reinhard often assumes the role of a silent observer in his photography. With respect and sensitivity, he shows us private moments without infringing upon the subjects' right to privacy. Additionally, there are abstract shots capturing insignificant moments on the periphery. Formal compositions, where football takes a back seat and photographic quality enriches the overall view with an important nuance, complement the exhibition.
The exhibition commences with the national team's training camp for the European Football Championship being held in Germany. The tournament progress will be reflected in the exhibition as well: New photographs will be added at least once a week, providing further insights from the photographer into the preparation and later the tournament. We can look forward to unseen facets of recent football history.
Philipp Reinhard was born in 1990 and is a passionate photographer and filmmaker specializing in reportage, portraiture, and campaigns. His focus is always on people, particularly in the context of sports. Editor-in-chief Benjamin Lorenz describes the works of the internationally active photographer as "Intense, close, honest." Reinhard captures extraordinary and fleeting moments that often go unnoticed. A skateboarder, basketball player, and surfer himself, Reinhard is passionate about sports, understands athletes, and allows us to be up close and personal at sporting events.
The exhibition "Black, Red, Gold!" is on display from May 24 to July 6, 2024, at the Leica Gallery Stuttgart (Calwer Straße 41). Approximately 40 photographs will be shown.
