About the Leitz Auction

Recap of the 46th Leitz Photographica Auction

The festivities surrounding the Leica I centennial in Wetzlar provided the ideal setting for the 46th Leitz Photographica Auction where more than 440 lots went under the hammer. The auction showcased a range of iconic cameras and rare gems, including lenses, accessories and many unique treasures.

The most highly sought-after lots included the Leica 0-Series No. 112, one of the few prototypes made before the Leica I was mass produced. The auction of the Leica M3 with the serial number 700000 was similarly impressive. This is the first of the legendary M-series cameras bearing a serial number and was once a gift to famous sports photographer and ski pioneer Prof. Stefan Kruckenhauser. In keeping with the 100th anniversary theme, the Leica I Mod. A Anastigmat, fittingly the 100th series-produced camera by Leica, also attracted a great deal of interest.

But the charity lot was the emotional climax of the auction. This was a Leica MP elaborately engraved by British designer John Dowell, alias King Nerd. The proceeds went to the “Licht ins Dunkel” relief organisation for social adhesion.

The auction was a resounding success and an integral part of the big centenary celebrations at the Leica Welt in Wetzlar.
