Street photography has taught me to appreciate the everyday scenarios I encounter. It helps me to recognise the many emotional moments that surround me. Moments that I used to overlook.

London-based photographer Alan Schaller specialises in black-and-white photography. His pictures stand out with surrealist, geometric and contrasting elements and garner international attention. His creative approach to image composition always focuses on light and the understanding of its effect. Alan Schaller was on the streets of Cape Town with the Leica M11 Monochrom. In a city known for its rapidly changing light conditions, his camera equipped him well to seize the symphony of light and shadow like no other.

“I’ve been using the Leica Monochrom series since it first came out. This fourth generation is undoubtedly the best. The creative power of the M11 Monochrom helps me to capture elusive moments in stunning quality.”

“The way we see light and the way that the camera sees light are two completely different things. Understanding that difference and using it to my advantage is very important in my approach to photography.”
