Leica’s new firmware update introduces 12-bit RAW video output to the Leica SL2-S and brings multiple improvements to the SL-System at large.
The RAW format is as relevant to filmmakers as photographers – both in terms of recording quality and post-production possibilities. Firmware version 3.0 for the Leica SL2-S enables the output of a Cinema 4K RAW video signal with up to 60 frames per second to an external recorder via HDMI. This means that it is now possible to capture 12-bit RAW video files with recorders such as the Atomos Ninja V, Atomos Ninja V+ or Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR. The RAW files are perfectly clean and offer a maximum dynamic range, colour fidelity and detail rendition for a professional workflow.
In addition to firmware version 3.0 for the Leica SL2-S, Leica has also released firmware version 4.0 for the Leica SL2. Between them, the two updates provide the following optimisations and new features for still photo and video recording: the ISO sensitivity of the sensor can now be controlled directly via the thumb wheel or the front settings wheel; furthermore, photographers can now set a timer for automatic network disconnection (Wi-Fi sleep mode). Another new feature is the ability to rate photos and videos, using the joystick.
The firmware updates enable the cameras of the SL-System to support additional functions for lenses of the L-Mount Alliance. Also, the number of functions that can be accessed directly via the FN button has increased. Geotagging via the Leica FOTOS App has been improved. When using face detection in AF mode, it is now possible to specify which eye the autofocus will prioritise. The ISO sensitivity can be fine-tuned even more precisely in the form of 1/2 or 1/3 EV steps. In addition, the new firmware versions allow the camera’s power saving mode to be fully disabled – making it possible to deactivate the autofocus shut-off when recording videos via HDMI. As always, the updates also correct flaws in the existing firmware.
Two further improvements are explicitly aimed at photographers: firstly, the ability to quickly shift the AF area back and forth between its most recent position and the centre of the image. Also, SL2/SL2-S photographers now have the benefit of an exposure and depth-of-field preview function.
Firmware update 3.0 for the Leica SL2-S, and firmware update 4.0 for the Leica SL2 are now available on the respective product page at www.leica-camera.com.
