Black and White photograph of a person in a foggy street

Beginning his Professional life as a legal advisor, the Ukranian photographer Taras Bychko’s career path dramatically changed when he bought a camera after the birth of his first child. Bychko’s style ever since has lain somewhere between the documentary and fine art image represented through both black & white and colour film.

Lviv is known for its rich history, architecture, stone houses, coffee and chocolate and is one of the most touristy cities in the Ukraine – Sykhiv is the quiet district sitting within that city, the ‘sleeping’ district to quote Bychko and the place where he was born. Although it is worlds away from the general ‘glitz’ of Lviv it is full of daily authentic life manifested by the ‘real’ existence of its indigenous Ukrainian inhabitants. At the heart of this work is a desire to preserve tender memories through creating a permanent document – a visual homage to an urban landscape which he feels is rapidly changing.

Out of Time similarly is a kind of homage - it serves to underline everything which does not seem to progress with the advancing years or sidestep the legacy of the former Soviet regime despite the economic, cultural and social changes which have developed since the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. This work is about how the past lives on, almost untouched by the present.
