Leica photography has always been shaped by pioneering women who opened new perspectives with their cameras. The exhibition "Four Strong Women" focuses on four exceptional female photographers: Herlinde Koelbl, Vera Mercer, Henrike Stahl, and Donata Wenders. Their works range from documentary long-term studies to surreal still lifes and poetic imagery, showcasing the diversity of photographic storytelling. Their works exemplify the artistic power with which female photographers view and interpret the world through the Leica lens.
Herlinde Koelbl presents excerpts from her impressive photographic cycles "Traces of Power," "Hair," and "Writers' Hands," as well as her surprising "Metamorphoses" on the ground floor of the gallery. Upstairs, Vera Mercer impresses with large-format, lush baroque still lifes, while Henrike Stahl convinces with sensitive-experimental photography. Donata Wenders presents her works on the series "Reading Time – Photographs and Moving Images" in the adjacent small Artshop gallery, including atmospheric scenes from Wim Wenders' film "Perfect Days" and an impressive video installation of her "Komorebi-Dreams."
The Gallery at the Cathedral has been a place of art in the heart of the historic Wetzlar old town for over 30 years and is deeply rooted in the Leica city. In collaboration with Leica, this exhibition project was launched to showcase exceptional female positions in Leica photography during the jubilee year.
