“Between City and Silence” – Kit Young
The Leica Gallery Munich presents the exhibition “Between City and Silence” by Kit Young

Kit Young’s work moves between the fleeting rhythm of the street and the quiet expanses of the landscape. His photographs of metropolitan centres such as Paris, New York and Venice distil incidental moments of urban life into images of remarkable atmospheric power. In contrast, his pared-back landscape photographs from Scotland and Wales reveal an almost meditative quality, where light, space and subtle tonal gradations take centre stage.

At the heart of Young’s photographic practice is analogue photography as a deliberate and unhurried process. For him, photography does not end with the click of the shutter. Rather, the negative marks the beginning of another equally essential stage in the making of an image: the focused work carried out in the darkroom. There, photographs are examined, interpreted and painstakingly crafted into silver gelatin prints. The resulting images are therefore not merely captured, but carefully shaped and refined step by step.

Strong contrasts, reflections and the deliberate use of blur lend the photographs a dreamlike character. At the same time, precise compositions guide the viewer’s eye towards what is essential: transitions, suggestions and the subtle tensions between movement and stillness. Young is particularly interested in the delicate interplay between reality and imagination. His images do not simply document places; they open up visual spaces in which the visible acquires a poetic, almost otherworldly quality.
