Leica Gallery Mexico City proudly presents the Territories of Serenity exhibition by the artists Koral Carballo (Poza Rica, Veracruz) and Greta Rico (Mexico City, Mexico). Carballo shares part of her series Right to Memory where she shows documentary work that she has carried out over the last 9 years in Afro-Mexican communities in Veracruz, working with oral history, portraiture, family and community memory.
Rico shows for the first time images from her series The Garden of Chaos, in which she addresses how agricultural practices around corn cultivation in Mexico are threatened by corporate interests and climate change.
The images of both artists engage in a visual and discursive dialogue that shows the strength that Mexican documentary photography has from a feminine perspective. Despite their different approaches to photographic creation, Carballo and Rico preserve the living memory of the territory and its population with empathy, operating in the cracks of history and generating first-rate visual testimonies, free of the biases imposed by patriarchy, corporate interests, and cycles of media distribution of the image.
The voices of both creators generate a shared sound that breaks the silence of the indifference towards the land and the care that memory demands of us.
