The Leica Gallery Düsseldorf presents the group exhibition "WATERSIDE MOMENTS" featuring three winning and finalist series of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, one of the most internationally renowned photography awards. For 45 years, Leica has contributed to the diversity and quality of photojournalistic work with this award, constantly exploring the relationship between humans and their environment. Authentic images and personal perspectives draw the viewer's attention to the relevance of individual humanitarian issues through conscious perspective choices:
ISMÁIL FERDOUS – SEA BEACH
Colorful life on the beach: Cox's Bazar lies at the southernmost point of Bangladesh. It is a popular destination for many people in the country, stretching along the Bay of Bengal. It is considered a cultural melting pot where individuals from all walks of life seek moments of relaxation and recreation. Although currently living in New York, the photographer (born in 1989) hails from Bangladesh and returned to this special place to capture beach visitors and the atmosphere in brilliant colors.
JONAS KAKÓ – THE DYING RIVER
The Colorado River once spanned over 2,000 kilometers from the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of California. However, in recent decades, water diversion for agriculture and growing cities has led to sections of the river drying up. In his series, the German photographer (born in 1992) portrays the struggle for water, crucial for around 44 million people. The future looks especially grim for the indigenous Cucapá people in the Colorado Delta: without the river, their culture will perish.
IRENE BARLIAN – LAND OF THE SEA
As the world's largest archipelago, Indonesia is acutely affected by advancing climate change, threatening the livelihoods of millions of people; their displacement is already a reality. The capital city, Jakarta, is already known as the fastest sinking metropolis in the world. Photography as a wake-up call: The Indonesian photographer (born in 1989) compellingly documents the humanitarian crisis and consequences of flooding in the coastal regions.
