Shared Experiences in the Great Karoo

25/06/2026

Friendships don't happen overnight. They grow with shared moments, trust, and mutual support. For hunters, it is often experiences in the wilderness that cement these friendships – moments full of emotion, concentration and awe for nature.

In the spring of last year, my wife Ilka and I set off for South Africa – to the vast, arid beauty of the Great Karoo. This time we were not alone, but accompanied by our English friends, who were setting foot on African soil for the first time. Even as we drove through the endless countryside, we could sense that something special awaited us here – a hunt that would yield not only prey, but also memorable encounters.

The Vastness of the Karoo

The Karoo welcomes us with quiet grandeur. The air shimmers above the reddish soil, acacia trees cast sparse shadows, and above it all lies this boundless tranquility. At the historic Willowslopes Lodge, in the middle of the Buccara Wildlife Reserve, we find our home for the coming days – a place where nature and time live at their own pace.

On the very first morning, it becomes clear that every detail, every decision counts here. The light changes by the minute, distances are difficult to estimate, and the wind is unpredictable. And this is exactly where our Leica hunting optics reveal their true strength.

Challenging Light Conditions

During the mandatory test shooting at the range, the Leica Magnus i 1.8–12x50 immediately impresses with its clear lines, impressive contrast and a red dot that remains fine and precise even in bright sunlight. Later in the day, while stalking, the true value of this optic becomes apparent: absolute reliability in every situation.

When Ilka spots a waterbuck on a rocky slope in the afternoon, the moment is decisive. The distance is great, but the precise rangefinder of the Geovid Pro 8x42 provides the necessary certainty. The light is challenging, but the image in the reticle remains steady and brilliant – the balance of sharpness, light and precision is perfect. She pulls the trigger, the bull is cleanly taken. The Magnus i guides us safely to our target, even where any hesitation would be too late.

Safety at Any Distance

The Leica Geovid Pro 8x42 is our constant companion on every stalk. Its combination of brilliant observation optics, precise distance measurement and ballistic intelligence makes it indispensable. In the open expanses of the Karoo, where illusion and reality are often only a glance apart, the Geovid Pro provides clear answers in a flash: distance, angle, and aiming point.

This precise information creates confidence – in the technology and in our own decisions. This is how observation becomes understanding, and distance becomes certainty.

Moments That Connect

In the late afternoon, we watch our friends stalk a herd of wildebeest. The wind is right, the tension rises. Through the Geovid Pro, we see every movement, every nuance. The shot is fired, the bull collapses – and in that moment, technology becomes emotion. We cheer, hug each other, share the joy of a successful moment that means far more than just hunting success.

Under the endless starry sky of the Karoo, with a gin and tonic by the campfire, we realise what these days have given us: shared experiences, deep friendship – and trust in equipment that is precise, reliable, and honest every second.

The combination of the Leica Magnus i 1.8–12x50 and Leica Geovid Pro 8x42 shaped our hunt in the Karoo – with precision, safety and the good feeling of seeing what matters at every moment.
Because true hunting experiences arise when technology and emotion, precision and trust, man and nature are in harmony.
