Seiya Nakai Photo Exhibition: “Scenic train rides with LEICA”
28 September - 1 December 2024 | Leica Gallery Kyoto

Leica Camera Japan is hosting a photo exhibition "Scenic train rides with LEICA" by photographer Seiya Nakai, who has pioneered a new genre of railway photography with his unique perspective and continues to work energetically every day, at the Leica Gallery Kyoto.

The exhibition showcases the works that capture the coexistence of Japan's ever-changing, beautiful seasons and railways from a unique perspective, featuring trains across the country set against backdrops of cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, clear blue skies, sunsets, and sometimes even snow-covered landscapes.

Seiya Nakai Photo Exhibition Held in Kyoto

The stunning beauty of Japan’s natural landscapes as they change with the seasons. Blending with the surrounding scenery, local trains continue their timeless journey, creating picturesque scenes that I long to share with as many people as possible. With that aim in mind, I have made it my daily mission to capture such moments through my lens.

The photographs I have selected for this exhibition are some of my favorite pieces from a vast collection of railway photos. They were all shot with Leica SL System cameras. The Tokyo exhibition features 17 pieces, while the one in Kyoto presents 15 images—each venue showcasing a different selection. I invite you to take your time with these images, and I’d be delighted if they make you feel as if you were on a scenic railway journey enjoying the vibrancy of the season.

During the event, the photo books "One Train a Day! II" and "Yuru-Tetsu" will be on sale at the gallery.

Seiya Nakai

Born in Tokyo in 1967, Seiya NAKAI has gained fame for his fresh and unique approach to railway photography. Not focusing solely on trains and inspired by his passion for railway travel in general, he has created novel styles of the genre with such original concepts as “A train a day” and “Yurutetsu”. This year marks the 20th anniversary of “A train a day”, a blog he started in 2004 with the objective of taking and posting at least one railway photo every day. To commemorate this milestone, exhibitions of his work are currently being held at various photography museums around the country. He runs the “Yurutetsu Gallery NOMAD”, a touring event he created to showcase and sell his work at varying locations while traveling and photographing all over Japan. He has a regular TV program on NHK-BS called “Nakai Seiya no Zekkei! Tetsutabi” (Seiya Nakai’s Spectacular Train Journeys).
