Photography with the Leica D-Lux 8
The D-Lux 8 Explained
What is the Leica D-Lux?
Does the D-Lux 8 have a zoom?
Yes. The D-Lux 8 features an optical zoom. This means that the fixed lens has a focal length range of 24–75 mm (equivalent to 35 mm format). This enables you to capture stunning photographs, whether you’re shooting wide-angle landscapes at 24 mm or portraits at 75 mm. The 24–75 mm range gives you enormous freedom when composing photos and videos. Even at high zoom levels, the optical image stabilisation helps reduce the risk of blurred images caused by camera shake.
Is the D-Lux 8 weather-sealed?
Unlike the Leica Q-Cameras, for example, the D-Lux 8 does not feature weather sealing. In practice, however, brief, light drizzle poses no threat to the D-Lux 8. In heavy rain, very dusty environments or conditions involving splashing water, additional protection is required to prevent dust or water from entering the camera.
Can I record videos with the D-Lux 8?
Yes, the D-Lux 8 enables you to record videos at a resolution of up to 4K at 30 frames per second. In Full HD mode, you can record at up to 60 frames per second. You can then transfer the videos to your smartphone via the Leica FOTOS App or USB-C.
Is the D-Lux 8 suitable for those who are new to photography?
Yes, the Leica D-Lux 8 is ideal for beginners who want to start taking high-quality photos and videos straight away without having to deal with complicated technology. Thanks to its automatic mode and intuitive operation, this camera makes it quick and easy to get started. At the same time, the camera offers plenty of scope for you to develop your own photography style step by step. You can also adjust the aperture, shutter speed and other settings entirely manually to experiment and learn. The included flash opens up further creative possibilities. Thanks to the seamless connection to the Leica FOTOS App, there is no need for a PC or laptop to transfer, edit and share your images.
What accessories are available for the D-Lux 8?
An extensive range of accessories is available for the D-Lux 8. These include coloured carrying straps, wrist straps, bags and protectors, as well as a hand grip, an automatic lens cap for optimum protection of the lens and spare batteries for extra power – for example, when travelling.
What is the difference between a compact camera and a system camera?
The D-Lux 8 is a compact camera with a fixed lens. This makes it small and straightforward to use straight away. System cameras have interchangeable lenses and usually have a larger sensor. This offers more flexibility, for example in the form of powerful telephoto lenses or particularly fast prime lenses. Together with the larger sensors, these deliver even better image quality in low light. However, these systems are generally larger, heavier and more expensive.
