“Through the Eyes of Saul Leiter”
Leica Gallery Frankfurt presents the exhibition “Through the Eyes of Saul Leiter”

The Leica Gallery Frankfurt is showcasing a retrospective of the legendary photographer Saul Leiter (1923–2013). The exhibition “Through the Eyes of Saul Leiter” offers a unique insight into the life and work of one of the most remarkable photographers of the 20th century. From May 22 to August 26, 2026, the gallery will present a carefully curated selection of Leiter’s iconic images as well as lesser-known works that reflect his distinctive artistic vision.

Leiter revolutionized the world of photography with his unique perspective and his ability to transform everyday scenes into delicate, poetic images. Yet he remained modest about his place in photographic history: “Maybe I am a pioneer, maybe I’m not. I don’t mind one way or the other.”

Leiter, who had been living in New York since the 1940s, developed an extraordinary ability to capture the cityscape in all its melancholy, hustle, and intimacy. The exhibition focuses both on his iconic color work, for which he secured his place in photographic history, and on his atmospheric black-and-white photographs, among which previously unseen treasures can be discovered.
