From an early age, Monica Menez was fascinated by fashion and enthusiastically staged “fashion shoots” with her friends. Even then, she knew she wanted to pursue a creative career. As a teenager, she realized that photography was the medium that combined everything she loved: fashion, aesthetics, and the ability to bring her own visions to life.
What began as playful experimentation has remained her way of creatively capturing the world to this day. She started her photographic career in a classic way, with an apprenticeship at a commercial photography studio in Stuttgart. She then worked for several years as a press photographer for various magazines. From there, she transitioned into fashion photography, with a clear focus on staged imagery.
Humor, irony, and the deliberate subversion of expectations played a central role in her work from early on. Monica Menez is interested in moments of surprise and in images that defy expectations and tell more than what is immediately apparent. This approach continues to shape her work as a fashion photographer and filmmaker.
Her images and films are characterized by a distinct visual language that blends sensuality, humor, and narrative elements. The result is work that goes beyond depicting fashion surfaces, instead creating its own narrative spaces. Her photographs, in her unmistakable style, capture moments of absurdity, humor, and eroticism, presenting fashion in a fresh and unique way.
