The Photographic Pursuit
Imagine for a second, it’s just past 5 AM in Delhi. The sun has yet to come out but there’s a dusty shade of sapphire that blankets the sky. It’s a colour that awakens your creative spirit, reminding you that there’s a story to be painted here. It's an atmosphere unique in its own right and, as a result, an opportunity for greatness. This transient window of light is a reminder that being in the right place is only half the story. The rest is what you do when you arrive.
“Greatness is a verb.”
Greatness isn’t this peak you reach and enjoy for the rest of your days. It’s something you earn, and continue to earn every day thereafter. It’s fickle and fleeting. Let it go to your head, and you’ll find yourself back in irrelevancy before you’ve even had a chance to enjoy the view. Greatness is something you work toward, and should the public deem you worthy, it’s a shared title that you become a caretaker of. And how do you earn this title?
For me, greatness is found in small, disciplined actions repeated month after month. It’s this gestating force of kinetic energy that truly believes ‘good’ isn’t good enough. Greatness is a standard you have to keep meeting every time you show up for your work, whether that’s behind the desk or behind a camera.
"Cameras are more than just tools."
Give a tool enough time, and it changes shape. It begins to take on new roles. Like a favourite piece of jewellery you feel naked without, a tool can become a talisman. It’s in this process that a camera can feel like so much more than the sum of its parts. And few objects speak to this feeling more than a Leica.
These cameras truly feel larger than the sum of their parts. The glass, the sensor, the housing—it all comes together for an experience that feels intentional while keeping the act of photography solely in your hands. And with each passing year, they seem to just get better and better.
From wirelessly uploading images from the field to seamlessly switching into ProRes 6K recording, there’s a relentlessness behind each Leica camera. It’s this core belief that no matter how well you perform, there’s still room for improvement. And it’s this constant iterating and sharpening that makes Leica a worthy companion for the pursuit of greatness.
“The truth is, the real romance in photography is this microscopic moment that sits just after a meaningful photo is taken.”
Gaja Balan
There’s a perceived romance to the photographer's lifestyle. This idea of travelling the world, chasing the next great frame, and sharing slices of the journey through prints, books, and galleries. The truth is, the real romance in photography is this microscopic moment that sits just after a meaningful photo is taken. It’s this brief moment of elation that feels overwhelmingly pure. And to chase that for a living is one of life’s great affairs.
It also demands responsibility.
We live in a time of endless efficiency where algorithms threaten to turn artists into glorified button pushers. It’s under that looming threat that I focus on preserving as much humanity in my creative process as possible.
My hope is to create these world-building visuals that have my identity imbued in the pixels and the ink. Visuals that make people genuinely feel something. And to be able to do that with a Leica, well, that’s icing on the cake.
