Leica Picture of the Year
Seit 2021 widmet die Leica Camera AG das Leica Picture of the Year herausragenden Leica Fotografen, die in die Leica Hall of Fame berufen wurden. Mit dem Award sind bisher zwölf renommierte Fotografinnen und Fotografen für ihr Lebenswerk geehrt worden. Um ein Stück dieses Erfolgs mit allen Leica Begeisterten zu teilen, wird jedes Jahr ein Leica Picture of the Year ausgewählt. Das Leica Picture of the Year bieten die weltweit 27 Leica Galerien exklusiv an. So eröffnet sich allen Sammlern und Leica Freunden die Möglichkeit, mit den limitierten Editionen eine einzigartige Sammlung großer Leica Fotografien aufzubauen.
Gewinner des Leica Picture of the Year 2023
Das Leica Picture of the Year 2023 ist eine ikonische Aufnahme des Fotografen Elliott Erwitt, die seit der Celebration of Photography auch in der Leica Hall of Fame Ausstellung in der Leica Galerie Wetzlar zu sehen ist. Die Schwarzweiß-Aufnahme entstand in New York City im Jahre 2000.
“Many of the dogs pictured must have looked appealing to me in their exotic settings, other dogs were appealing in reasonably well-composed photographs and some others seemed to transcend their easy obvious charm and to have allegorical connotations to us humans and our human condition. As I think about this now, my comments don’t sound particularly surprising. I don’t know of any other animals closer to us in qualities of heart, sentiment and loyalty. Some people say elephants come close. Personally, I find elephants too bulky, unwieldy and inaccessible for everyday photography and not at all cuddly or attractive with those big long noses. Besides, they do not roam the streets in every town and country like dogs do. And dogs make easy, uncomplaining targets without the self-conscious hang-ups and possible objections of humans caught on film.” Elliott Erwitt

Thomas Hoepker
Das Leica Picture of the Year 2022 ist eine ikonische Aufnahme des deutschen Fotografen Thomas Hoepker, die im selben Jahr auch in der großen Retrospektive „Thomas Hoepker – Bilderfabrikant“ im Ernst Leitz Museum Wetzlar zu sehen war. Die Schwarzweiß-Aufnahme entstand während eines mehrmonatigen Roadtrips Hoepkers, auf dem er 1963 im Auftrag des deutschen Magazins „Kristall“ die USA mit ebenso neugierigem wie kritischem Blick entdeckte.
Ralph Gibson
Der 1939 in Los Angeles geborene Fotograf ist einer der wichtigsten stilbildenden Fotografen seiner Generation. Bis heute ist Ralph Gibsons Bildsprache ebenso individuell wie zeitlos. Oft nah am Objekt, bringt er seine Motive in ein faszinierendes Wechselspiel von Abstraktion und Figuration.
Am 4. November 2021 wurde Ralph Gibson von der Leica Camera AG in Wetzlar mit dem Leica Hall of Fame Award ausgezeichnet.
