But Which Smart Mini Projector Is the Right Choice for You?

Projection Brightness: How Bright Does Your Projector Really Need to Be?

Leica Cine Compact 1

The Leica Cine Compact 1 is capable of achieving a brightness of up to 1,700 lumens in  ultra mode. This makes it particularly suitable for darker rooms or spaces where you can control lighting in a targeted fashion. The brighter the surroundings, the more you will need to reduce the image size. The existing light output is then distributed across a smaller area, delivering high-contrast, immersive images.

By comparison, a 100-inch projection from the Cine Compact 1 is perceived to be as bright as a much larger 140-inch projection from the Cine Play 1. When used in bright ambient light, a suitable screen is recommended.

With a light output of up to 3,000 lumens, the Leica Cine Play 1 goes much further and can thus be deployed more flexibly in everyday use. Even in bright rooms or in daylight, the image remains clearly visible. This makes it the right choice if you want to use your projector regularly without darkening the room.

In concrete terms, this means the Cine Play 1 really comes into its own over larger projection areas in brighter environments.

Zoom & Set-up Flexibility: How Much Freedom Do You Have in Terms of Positioning?

Both the Leica Cine Compact 1 and the Leica Cine Play 1 feature an optical and digital zoom. While the optical zoom adjusts the picture via the lens system with glass elements, keeping the full image quality, the digital zoom enlarges the image digitally, i.e. using software. For optimal 4K projection, optical zoom is preferred.

The Leica Cine Compact 1 offers a zoom range of 1.0 to 1.3. This makes it particularly suitable for setups where the distance to the projection area remains relative stable – for example, in a small room or in a fixed position.

On the other hand, the Leica Cine Play 1 can cover much greater distances with its zoom range of 0.9 to 1.5. This gives you more flexibility during positioning, making it easier to achieve the desired image size even if the distance to the screen varies.

Dimension & Portability: Flexible Use or Fixed Installation?

Der Leica Cine Compact

The Leica Cine Compact 1 is around 30% smaller than the Leica Cine Play 1 and 2 kg lighter. This makes it much more portable and allows it to be used more flexibly in a variety of rooms and application scenarios – from the living room to a temporary outdoor setup.

Despite its compact design, the Cine Compact 1 is made from high-quality material and features an aluminium housing with a glass front. It meets the high functional and aesthetic requirements of the Leica product range.

For additional convenience during transport, a robust and sustainable EPP transport box is included in the scope of delivery. This reliably protects the device and enables mobile applications. A further feature of the Leica Cine Compact 1 is its extraordinary flexibility. Thanks to the integrated 360° rotation system, projections are possible at just about every angle – on walls, ceilings, or other surfaces.

Leica Cine Play 1

On the other hand, the Leica Cine Play 1 is better suited to staying in the same position. The design of the Leica Cine Play 1 won the iF Design Award in 2025 and blends particularly well into upscale living spaces. With its larger unit size, it is ideal for fixed home cinema setups where the projector is permanently installed.

The optional Leica Floor Stand 1 offers even greater flexibility. This specially designed stand enhances the technical performance of both Leica projectors while also showcasing their full aesthetic potential. In addition, the stand enables flexible positioning of the projectors in any room. For the Cine Play 1, power is supplied discretely via the stand’s base plate and through the integrated pin contact system that connects to the projector. An adapter included in the scope of supply for the Cine Compact 1 also allows it to be used with the stand. In contrast to the Leica Cine Play 1, power is supplied not by the Floor Stand 1’s integrated pin contact system but by the Cine Compact 1’s own cable.

Audio Performance: Is the Integrated Sound Enough?

The Leica Cine Play 1 is equipped with a large 1.2-litre acoustic chamber and two integrated 10-watt speakers. It produces powerful, expansive sound, which is particularly suitable for large living rooms. In many situations, an additional audio solution is unnecessary.

The Leica Cine Compact 1 also provides a great sound experience for its size. With an audio chamber of 0.75 litres, it offers balanced audio suitable for smaller rooms and flexible set-up locations.

Both projectors are equipped with the integrated audio technologies Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS Virtual:X, providing the basis for an impressive surround-sound experience. For an augmented, immersive sound experience, external speakers can optionally be connected via Bluetooth or HDMI.
