Fading Threads
At the Edge of the World
High in the Indian Himalayas, where the air thins and the mountains stretch beyond the horizon, photographer and cinematographer Levin Mundinger sets out to document a remote culture on the brink of extinction. His journey leads him to encounter a nomadic community where herding and weaving – ancient crafts passed down through countless generations – are slowly fading as younger members leave for opportunities in the cities.
“Fading Threads offers a brief glimpse into the lives of nomads at 5,200 metres in the Himalayan mountain ranges. They herd goats across vast alpine pastures, spinning and weaving wool into textiles that carry stories, identity and survival within every thread.”

Every Frame Tells a Story
Levin’s project focuses on one nomadic community’s quiet struggle to endure in one of the most remote and untouched corners of the world – their culture and humanity delicately captured on the Leica SL-System, transforming the most challenging of environments into breathtaking visual narratives.
Cinematic Vision
Levin’s approach is intimate and immersive. He utilises a combination of lenses including a selection of Leica R lenses to achieve his cinematic vision. The versatility and robustness of the SL-System proved essential in the harsh conditions, while its low-light capabilities allowed him to work with natural light during early dawn migrations and in dimly lit weaving tents.
“For as long I can remember, I have had a love for Leica cameras. Early on, it was their beautiful design, exceptional mechanics and innovative technologies that drew me in. Today, it’s all of that and more – it’s a shared passion for art and the many ways it can be captured.”

Through sprawling vistas and intimate portraits, Levin uncovers more than a disappearing craft – he captures the resilience of a community in the face of modernity. Each frame acts as both a record and tribute to this will to endure.
