Our Gallerist Lou Proud
For nearly three decades Lou has worked in the world of photography and with some of its most eminent names. Her first job was at Magnum Photos, London working alongside Henri Cartier-Bresson on his sweep of London exhibitions for his 90th Birthday celebrations. During her time at Magnum Photos she also worked with Eve Arnold, Josef Koudelka, Martin Parr, Peter Marlow, Stuart Franklin and Ian Berry.
After Magnum Photos Lou was hired to help open a brand-new fine art photography gallery Focusfounded with passion by Dorothy Bohm & Helena Kovac before going on to work closely with contemporary art and photography dealer Eric Franck who was also a well known collector of both genres.
Subsequently she became the Associate Director at Atlas Gallery, a private photographs dealer and then after being head hunted by Bonhams and Phillips de Pury & Co joined the latter where she later became Head of Photographs, London.
After leaving Phillips (as it became) Lou curated and produced the catalogue From Dada to Vogue collages and photographs by Erwin Blumenfeld for Osborne Samuel Gallery as a freelance curator and worked as Senior Photographs Specialist for Qatar Museums. She was introduced to the Managing Director of Leica UK in 2018 and was offered the role of opening its new Mayfair space as Gallery Director/Curator.
All my photographic life I have known about Leica, the associated legends and their cameras - the first Leica I ever saw one was inside Henri's jacket pocket. It is wonderful to come full circle and work as part of their cultural arm, continuing to show wonderful classic photography whilst introducing a new generation of photographers who follow in their footsteps.
Lou Proud
