About the Workshop

Join Leica Akademie Nordics on a workshop dedicated to building a cohesive photographic travel series in the city of Porto, Portugal.

Known for its iconic scenery and medieval architecture, Porto has become a destination for exceptional travel photography. In this workshop, you will find a deeper understanding of the city beyond its obvious landmarks, learning the importance of storytelling and consistency in your travel photography and understanding how images work together as part of a visual story.

This photographic adventure will also take you on an optional, behind-the-scenes journey to the iconic Leica Portugal Factory, located northeast of Porto in Vila Nova de Famalicão. Opened in 1973 by the Leitz family, this location plays a vital role in the manufacturing of Leica products and celebrated 50 years of operation in 2023.

Led by Leica tutor, photographer and filmmaker, Alexandre Archimbaud, you will learn from his extensive experience with visual storytelling: how to arrive in an unfamiliar place, observe like a local as much as possible and translate atmosphere, human presence, and cultural detail into a coherent photographic narrative.

What level of photography experience do I need?

All levels of photography experience are welcome.

What is included in the price?

  • Training and guidance from a Leica expert in the streets of Porto and in the Leica Akademie space.
  • An optional camera loan, but bringing your own camera is encouraged (all cameras are welcome).
  • A guided tour of the Leica Factory, including transfer.
  • Group lunches and dinners (Friday and Saturday).

What is not included in the price?

  • Flights.
  • Accommodation.
  • Airport transfers or travel.
  • Any visa costs.
  • Medical and health-related costs.

Will cameras be provided?

Cameras are available to loan upon request, camera model and lenses are subject to availability. A photo ID and signed loan form are required for all equipment loans.

What do I need to bring with me?

You are invited to bring your own camera, a light camera bag and a comfortable camera strap. It is also advisable to have purchased medical and health and travel insurance on beforehand, as a precaution.

What Hotel and Flights do you recommend?

We recommend the Eurostars Porto Centro Hotel, it has a 4 star rating, and is across the street from Leica Akademie Porto, making it central and ideal for our Destination Workshop. As for return flights, there are two providers with direct flights, SAS and Norwegian.
