On the occasion of the reopening of Leica Galerie Milano, a selection of works is presented focusing on one of the most iconic—and at the same time most intimate—themes in photography: the gaze.
The exhibition originates from a curatorial section of the project “Street Photography Masterpieces from the Leica Archive”, originally presented at the Ernst Leitz Museum, and centers on images in which the photographed subject looks directly into the camera. What emerges is a bidirectional visual dimension, where viewer and subject meet and reflect one another. Alongside photographs from the Leica Archive, the exhibition is enriched by a selection of works by nine contemporary Italian photographers who, through different visual languages and perspectives, have made the encounter of gazes central to their practice. The images on display draw from the purest tradition of street photography and reportage—a tradition born alongside Leica, moving through the streets to observe the magic of the unpredictable—while at the same time posing an unavoidable question: who is looking at whom?
