The Leica Gallery Munich provides an exciting glimpse into the career of the renowned Canadian photographer Douglas Kirkland with the exhibition "The Legendary Photography of Douglas Kirkland." Kirkland, who passed away in 2022, is famous for his portraits of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Coco Chanel, Jack Nicholson, and many more. His photographs are characterized by a unique blend of technical perfection and emotional expression. The exhibition showcases a comprehensive selection of Kirkland's most famous works and pays homage to his illustrious career as a photographer. Visitors can expect a photographic journey through a world full of luminaries from the film, entertainment, and music industries.
Born in 1934 in Toronto, Kirkland began his photography career at the age of 24 as a staff photographer for the U.S. magazine Look. His internationally renowned series "A Night with Marilyn" was created in 1961 for Look, followed by a series on Coco Chanel in 1962. Kirkland also worked as a special photographer on over 150 film productions (including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Saturday Night Fever, Titanic, and others) and received numerous awards for his lifetime achievement as a still photographer. In 2019, he was honored in the documentary film "That Click." His wife Françoise Kirkland, married to Douglas Kirkland since 1967, stood by his side until his passing and continues to manage his archive to this day.
"The Legendary Photography of Douglas Kirkland" exhibition will be on display at the Leica Gallery Munich, located at 4 Maffeistraße, from April 26, 2024, to July 20, 2024. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Admission is free. The photographs from the exhibition are available for purchase, with limited editions.
