The Leica Gallery Stuttgart presents an exhibition of the Stuttgart photographer Erwin Fieger, honoring his life's work.
Erwin Fieger (1928–2013) is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern color photography. Trained as a graphic designer, he published photographs from his travels in numerous photo books and received major international awards.
At the heart of the exhibition are his photographs of London from the 1950s. To this day, they are considered milestones of artistic color photography and were already featured in 1960 at photokina in Cologne as part of the legendary exhibition Magic of Color. Fieger portrays a London in transition: both elegant and rugged, shaped by historic façades, bustling streets, markets, and the people who give the city its character. Rather than staging spectacular scenes, he captures fleeting moments of everyday life. Through his keen sense of color, light, and composition, he developed a visual language that was ahead of its time. Particularly characteristic is his creative use of long focal lengths, transforming ordinary scenes into painterly compositions.
The exhibition offers insights into the diversity of his photographic work, ranging from the Olympic Games and motor racing to journeys across almost every continent. His guiding principle, “A Tribute to Life,” encapsulates the photographic vision that remained consistent throughout his career: not merely documenting people, cities, and landscapes, but revealing their atmosphere and emotional depth.
The exhibition is presented in cooperation with the Erwin Fieger Estate and the German Photographic Archive of the SLUB Dresden.
