Alwin Maigler Photo Exhibition: “NOCTURNE”

Leica Camera Japan Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce the Alwin Maigler photo exhibition, NOCTURNE,  by the  German photographer Alwin Maigler, to be held at the Leica Gallery Omotesando. 

NOCTURNE is the latest series by Maigler, who has been capturing the Stuttgart Ballet since 2020. The series was created with the understanding that "leaves creative space for chance and improvisation," and it was brought to completion through a direct and congenial collaboration between the photographer and dancers. The exhibition features 15 carefully selected snapshots from a series capturing the dancers drawn out of the theatre and into the streets at night, dancing and playing on their urban stage. The works on display are created using the precise carbon print method, a classical technique, and each piece is hand-crafted, making it a unique work of art.

"Alwin Maigler's Nocturnes are not posed, nor are they taken without technical trickery - they are the result of a direct and congenial collaboration between the photographer and dancers of the Stuttgart Ballet, who move completely in the dark, inviting the photographer to be part of their performance. Coincidence plays an important role here, and moreover, The pictures are testimonies to fleeting moments, a cheerful game, snapshots of life. There is no narrative, but rather a series of film stills that invite the viewer's own contemplation and interpretation. The viewer is immersed in a world full of lively, creative characters. The fact that the images are nevertheless full of grace and perfection, making the viewer forget the high level of professionalism and body control of the protagonists, is due to the unusual conception of the series, which leaves creative space for chance and improvisation. The adventure of life takes its course; darkness is overcome; elegance and beauty rule the world! What a marvelous utopia!“
