Stillness, Light and Snow
Julia Nimke travels the world with her eyes wide open. The Berlin-based photographer has specialised in capturing extraordinary places – whether she’s hiking to the Matterhorn basecamp or sitting in a kayak at dawn capturing the first rays of sun over the water. When she took the Leitzphone on a business trip to St. Moritz, it found itself in the hands of a photographer who knows no compromise when it comes to quality – and passed the test.
Find out what photographer Julia Nimke thinks of the Leitzphone, what experiences she had using it and how her first pictures turned out in the interview below.
How would you describe your photographic style and subject matter?
Julia Nimke: Light-based. Capturing light and the various moods it takes on over the course of a day brings me much joy. In doing so, I rely on warm tones and prefer simple compositions with a lot of atmosphere.
What has been your experience with the Leitzphone used as a camera?
Julia Nimke: I had many exciting moments while taking pictures with the Leitzphone and am impressed with the quality. It just performs like a really good camera, which you can always have with you due to its smartphone size, and which convincingly masters many lighting conditions.
You took the Leitzphone along with you on a business trip to St. Moritz to take pictures of snowy landscapes, among other things. Did it help you access this subject matter more easily?
Julia Nimke: Yes, with its compact size, it’s the perfect companion for outdoor activities and fast-changing situations.
Was there a moment when the boundaries between a smartphone and a traditional camera melted away for you?
Julia Nimke: I took photos in RAW format for the most part and post-processed them on the laptop. The dynamic range and easy handling of the files is extremely impressive. And the images are definitely very similar to photos taken with a traditional camera.
The beauty of St. Moritz is apparent not only in the vast mountain panoramas but also in the little things: warm light reflections, small details, quiet moments away from the ski slopes. For these kinds of pictures, Julia made use in particular of the Leitzphone’s optical telephoto zoom. It allowed her to separate subjects from their surroundings and capture them with ease – precisely, simply and inconspicuously. There’s no question of the Leitzphone replacing a traditional camera for Julia as a professional photographer. However, she finds the thought of potential future projects where precisely such a device is called for rather appealing.
