"People, Places, Moments“ - Elliott Erwitt
Leica Gallery Heidelberg presents the exhibition “People, Places, Moments“ by Elliott Erwitt

Few photographers viewed the world with as much humor, sensitivity, and clarity as Elliott Erwitt (1928–2023). Whether on the streets of major cities, at historic encounters between political figures, or amid the quiet absurdities of everyday life, Erwitt possessed the remarkable ability to reveal the extraordinary within seemingly ordinary situations.

The exhibition in Heidelberg traces a photographic journey across continents and decades. From postwar New York and Paris to the streets of Barcelona and the landscapes of Wyoming, and onward to Kyoto and Rio de Janeiro, his photographs offer a multifaceted perspective on people, places, and ways of life.

Iconic images such as Jacqueline Kennedy at the funeral of John F. Kennedy are presented alongside poetic, humorous, and often surprising observations of everyday life. Characterized by impeccable timing, visual elegance, and a profound sense of humanism, Erwitt’s photographs extend far beyond the specific moment in which they were created. They speak of curiosity, empathy, and the shared experiences that connect people across cultural and geographical boundaries—revealing the unique combination of compassion, subtle humor, and keen observation with which Elliott Erwitt captured the human experience in all its many facets.
