Leica Gallery London is excited to present, in collaboration with two major private photographs collections a distinctive group of some of the most recognised images from the pages of Vogue, Tatler and Harper's Bazaar, These visions by twentieth century masters of photography were created by the photographers who made the 'glossies' of the day great: Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Horst P. Horst, Norman Parkinson, William Klein, Cecil Beaton and Arthur Elgort among others.
The exhibition pays homage to the incredible timeless beauty of these carefully crafted compositions showcasing clothes by the designers du jour - Balenciaga features strongly and stuns in Elise Daniels with Street Performers, Suit by Balenciaga, Le Marais, Paris, August 1948 by Richard Avedon and Cocoa-Coloured Balenciaga Dress (Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn), Paris 1950 by Irving Penn.
Apart from the sublime clothes and jewellery with many a gloved hand propping up an elegance which is not so common today, these works give the viewer an opportunity to witness photographic printing at its most sublime - with tones, papers and techniques still a world away from the currently much advanced digital version; there has never been for example a colour process more rich and velvet-like than the incredibly expensive, complicated and durable dye-transfer employed in Horst P. Horst’s Advertisement for Jerbe Stockings, Paris 1985.
The exhibition contains twenty two connoisseur works spanning from the 1940s right up to the 1990s with prices starting at £3,000 plus VAT.
