Barbara Klemm and Lena Mucha

Images of current events shape our perception of reality, which is precisely why nuanced perspectives are important. Even today, female perspectives are rare in the male-dominated world of press photography, and many voices are underrepresented. To highlight the importance of photography for documenting current events, press photography pioneer Barbara Klemm enters into dialogue with Berlin-based photographer Lena Mucha.

From December 5, 2025, to February 7, 2026, the Leica Gallery Vienna will be showing the exhibition “In Conversation: A Photographic dialogue between Barbara Klemm & Lena Mucha.” It is part of the international exhibition series marking the 100th anniversary of Leica photography, which brings together outstanding photographic works from the past and present in a visual dialogue at 12 Leica galleries worldwide. 100 years of Leica photography have produced a multitude of outstanding photographic works, which are now being showcased at 29 Leica galleries. As mediators of culture, art, and knowledge, the galleries assume an important social responsibility. In doing so, they master the balancing act between presenting contemporary photography and the great icons of the past. 

To mark its 100th anniversary, Leica is celebrating this heritage with a special concept that brings the past and future of photography into visual dialogue. Each month, a selected Leica Gallery will open an exhibition that pairs a contemporary talent with one of the Leica Hall of Fame winners. This will result in a total of twelve exciting pairs whose works complement each other, refer to each other, and inspire each other. With Barbara Klemm, the Leica Gallery Vienna has the special opportunity to honor the work of a pioneer of female press photography. She is juxtaposed with the independently conceived project “Pioneers” by Berlin reportage photographer Lena Mucha, in which the photographer accompanies two young Yazidi women in their everyday lives in Germany.
