On the journey to the largest piano in the world
Julia Tiemann accompanied pianist Marius Nitzbon on his journey to Latvia, where they met 70-year-old German-Latvian David Klavins. Klavins dedicated almost his entire life to piano construction. In his quest for the ultimate sound, the trained piano restorer created a spectacular work: a vertically constructed, six-meter-tall piano installed on the wall of the new concert hall in the Latvian port city of Ventspils
This unique instrument, and possibly the largest piano in the world, attracts the attention of composers, pianists, and music enthusiasts from around the world, including Marius Nitzbon. The musician from Hamburg captivates his listeners with his especially emotional and equally rhythmic piano sounds. During his mostly improvised concerts, he combines classical piano tones with delay effects and synthesizers. Now, he had the opportunity to record his music on the unique piano and to meet the person who built it.
