On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Bregenzer Festspiele, Jan von Holleben is presenting a new photo series dedicated to the stage designs of past productions. The photographer brings the festival’s historical archive to light and transforms it into a contemporary visual experience. Through precise lighting and color effects, the stage models are reinterpreted and removed from their original context. They no longer appear as mere documents of past performances, but as visual worlds in their own right.

According to the photographer, flying through the models of the stage sets—some of which are decades old—with his camera and as a “giant” felt like a fantastic journey through time. Jan von Holleben immersed himself in a wide variety of stories, encountered individual characters in miniature, and now offers numerous new perspectives on these masterpieces—both on the productions themselves and on the artfully crafted stage models.
