“OBSERVER” - Nomi Baumgartl
The Leica Gallery Heidelberg presents the exhibition “OBSERVER” by Nomi Baumgartl.

The exhibition “OBSERVER” presents 21 photographs by Leica photographer Nomi Baumgartl from her project Eagle Wings – Protecting the Alps. The works reveal the beauty and fragility of the Alps in the face of climate change.

For many years, Nomi Baumgartl has explored the fragile relationship between humans and nature. In Eagle Wings, she combines artistic photography with scientific observation, offering new perspectives on the Alps: the view from the ground, the perspective of an eagle from the air, and the view from space. Photographs, aerial imagery, and satellite images reveal the changes taking place within the Alpine ecosystem.

The works on display take viewers to locations including the Rhône Glacier, Aiguille du Dru on Mont Blanc, Sölden, and the Zugspitze. Monumental ice formations and delicate transitions between snow, rock, and water illustrate the changing landscape. The glaciers emerge not only as striking natural phenomena, but also as powerful records and key indicators of climate change.

Working with institutions such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Baumgartl combines her photographs with scientific insights. Eagle Wings – Protecting the Alps presents photography as an invitation to shift our perspective and strengthen our awareness of our responsibility towards the natural environment.
