Roger the Rat

With Roger, the Rat, the artist has created a persona that enables him to capture the dark and grotesque sides of the human psyche in pictures. The artist stages a variety of possible scenarios from the life of Roger, the Rat and deliberately blurs the border between himself and his animal protagonist, as Roger, the Rat is embodied by none other than himself. The boundary between fact and fiction begins to crumble, as does the one between seriousness and comedy. Step into the world of Roger the Rat!

Roger Ballen was born in New York in 1950 but for nearly 40 years he has lived and worked in South Africa. In addition to documentary and conceptual photography projects, he has produced short films and published a series of photo books.
