Steeped in History

Jane Evelyn Atwood explores the shore of the western tip of Brittany with the Leica M11.

To the west and slightly south of Paris on a map of France is Bretagne – Brittany – and on its western tip, Finistère – literally the end of the earth. Almost completely surrounded by water, Finistère is steeped in history, Celtic roots and a strong Catholic heritage that is everywhere present. This is the region where I worked with the Leica M11.

Although I am generally known for my photos of people, in Finistère I found the human presence dwarfed by the incredible character of nature.

"When I used the M11, it was exactly like the M7 that I used for the last ten years. It was light, the viewfinder was fabulous. It was small, it was discreet."
