Nature & Landscape Photography
From the expansive plains of East Africa to the snow-covered peaks of the Alps, nature and landscape photography are dedicated to the beauty and diversity of the natural world. The landscapes immortalised by famous photographers, such as Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell, have defined standards that have not only paved the way for countless other nature photographers, but also raised awareness for both flora and fauna.
The interest in this photographic genre remains as popular as ever. Even so, choosing the right tool can make the difference between a good picture and an outstanding one. Leica models like the SL3, D-Lux 8 or S3 have shown themselves to be excellent choices for nature friends. All three cameras share in common that they handle with precision and dependability. The high resolution and great colour reproduction of the SL3 and S3 offer users the possibility to capture even the finest details and nuances. The D-Lux 8, with its exceptionally compact construction, is ideal for photographers who are often moving through rough terrain, and who want to reduce the weight of their equipment to a minimum.
Wait for the perfect moment: endurance and the lighting are decisive factors.
Light plays a role of primary importance in nature and landscape photography, because it has a major influence on the feel and the impact of an image. The golden hour, just after sunrise and before sunset, bathes everything in a soft warm light that allows landscapes to glow in magical colours, and is ideal for emphasising silhouettes. In contrast, the blue hour – the times just after sunset and before sunrise – can be used to achieve pictures with an almost mystical atmosphere.
Naturally, this requires a sky that is not completely overcast, and weather that plays along. As this is not always the case, nature and landscape photographers need to have a lot of stamina and an adventurous spirit. Long distances and many hours, or even days, in one place are often demanded of the photographer, in order to seize the perfect light and the ideal moment. This sacrifice, however, is often rewarded with breathtaking images which reveal nature in all its splendour.
