A Movement of Its Own

Handcrafted Excellence

“Das Wesentliche”: focusing on the essential has always been at the core of our design philosophy. The principle of timeless simplicity seamlessly extends to the Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2 watches. The exquisite timepieces are distinguished by our unmistakable aesthetic – coupled with unconventional solutions to classic timekeeping functions, brought to life by Prof. Achim Heine, German Product Designer.

Made in Germany

The ZM 1 and ZM 2 watches and their calibers are exclusively Made in Germany, from the initial concept through to production. The movement and the watch components are manufactured in Lehmann Präzision’s workshop in Germany. Due to the exclusive nature of their production, the timepieces are only available in limited quantities.

A New Expression of Distinction

Domed sapphire crystal, finely blasted surfaces contrasting with brushed and polished details, a watch case with a fully integrated display back, and of course, the patented push-crown inspired by a camera shutter release button – the Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2 are a subtle homage to the timeless Leica M design. We have always created design icons with our M-Cameras, and we continue to uphold this standard with our watches.

Functional and Aesthetic

"The references from the Leica Camera world are not an end in themselves; they make sense, they have functionality," emphasises Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board and majority owner of Leica Camera AG.

The Manual Leica Calibres

Our innovative approach to watchmaking led to the introduction of new functions and the re-interpretation of traditional watch complications: the patented push-crown with seconds reset, the movement status display, the unique power reserve, and the day/night indicator.

These different functions and display types required their own integrated movement. With their exceptional construction and unique decoration, the hand-wound calibres LH-10 (ZM 1) and LH-20 (ZM 2) are a striking reflection of our industrial yet artisanal tradition – and a testament to our strong focus on the wearer’s interaction with the watch.

Set Time with the Push of a Button

Inspired by the shutter release button of a camera, our patented push-crown is a novel innovation within the watchmaking industry. Rather than being pulled out, the crown simply has to be pushed to reset the small seconds hand to zero – whereby the circular status indicator on the dial turns into a red dot. The result is a convenient and ultra-precise method of setting the correct time. Just like the shutter button of a Leica camera, pressing the push-crown is, essentially, a way of freezing time.

Designing an Icon

“When developing the watches, it was clear from the start that there had to be a close connection between the camera details with their clear geometry and the watches,” explains Achim Heine, Professor of Product Design at the University of the Arts Berlin and designer of many Leica cameras and binoculars. “The details of the Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2, inspired by M-Cameras, are further developed in their design language, becoming individual and unmistakable components of the watches.”
